When and How to Call it Quits: Raising the Possibility of Changing Therapists
Thursday, August 28th at 6:00 PM
at Vero Amore Plaza Palomino
2920 N. Swan Road (Swan and Fort Lowell)
Tucson, AZ 85712
All of us have had the experience of realizing that our work with a particular client is not going well. Sometimes good consultation or a peer supervision group’s input can be helpful, and turn things around.
But sometimes it can’t. This open discussion will focus on when to think about terminating therapy with a client and how to bring it up with the client. Navigating this minefield of emotions, risks and responsibilities is a daunting task for even the most experienced of therapists, and our hope is to benefit from each other’s knowledge and experience around how to do this as well as possible, ideally giving the client an opportunity to move forward in his or her work, with someone else.

The next meeting will be at the UA RISE Health and Wellness Center (Camp Wellness), at 1030 N Alvernon Way, in the large upstairs classroom. Look for a 2-story ivory stucco building on the southeast corner of Alvernon and 1st Street, just one block south of Speedway at Alvernon. There's a red exterior stairway on the side of the building facing Alvernon, and the building is on the south side of 1st Street, just across from the large Shell Station which is on the corner of Alvernon and Speedway.
We will meet on Thursday, April 24th at 6:30 pm, to discuss what we've learned about PQRS and psychologists' obligations under Medicare rules. Possible video/webinar viewing.
Professional Outreach meetings in 2014 will be on the fourth (4th) Thursdays of alternating months: February (27th), April (24th), June (26th), August (28th), October (23rd), and we’ll skip December. That’s even-numbered months, for those who notice such things. Generally, I’m thinking that we can plan to meet at 6:00 pm, and we’ll start this coming February 27th at the NEW site of Vero Amore at Swan and Fort Lowell, just a few doors down from the old one. Address is 2920 N Swan Rd, Tucson, AZ 85712 (520) 325-4122. We’ll either be in the back room or outside on the patio.
This first meeting of 2014 will be somewhat organizational in nature: we can discuss possible discussion topics (and locations, if folks wish) for the upcoming months.
Possible topics for future meetings can include:
1. Understanding ICD vs DSM Diagnostic Code Systems, and When Do We Have to Use What.
2. Social Networking and Practice Integrity: How to Combine Them (possible guest speaker to present)
3. When to Call it Quits: How We Raise the Possibility of Changing Therapists
4. Dealing with Dual Relationships in the Community
5. The Challenges of Self-Disclosure: How Human Should We Be?
