DESCRIPTION
The Student Affiliates in School Psychology at the University of Arizona, in conjunction with the Southern Arizona Psychological Association, welcomes Dr. Lisa Persinger for an afternoon of learning and discussion about how best to serve gender expansive students within the school system. Her talk, "Psychological Science: Supporting Healthy Development of Students Presenting as Gender Expansive and Transgendered in Schools", will offer participants the opportunity to gain experience related to the following objectives:
  • Participants will differentiate common and uncommon terminology used by youth and adults to refer to one's gender identity and sexual orientation.
  • Participants will critique the historical approaches to psychological treatment of gender dysphoria in children and will assess the outcomes of these approaches.
  • Participants will compile the current, scientifically supported, approaches to psychological treatment of expansive gender expression and transgender identity in young children and adolescents.
  • Participants will describe ways that school-based psychology practitioners can facilitate school-wide actions to ensure safety and support healthy development for children and youth presenting as gender expansive and transgendered.

Continuing Education Credits:
These events are offered for two (2) Category 1 CE Credit. Participants must sign in, be present for the entire presentation, and complete the Evaluation Questionnaire in order to obtain a CE Certificate. The Southern Arizona Psychological Association (SAPA) is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. SAPA maintains responsibility for all of its programs and content. Join us for this unique opportunity to learn from and network with fellow professional in the Southern Arizona region. Light refreshments will be provided.

Dr. Lisa L. Persinger currently serves as the coordinator of Northern Arizona University School Psychology Programs. She is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist and a licensed psychologist in Arizona. Dr. Persinger obtained her Ph.D. and M.S. from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. She obtained an M.A. degree in Counseling and Social Psychologies from Ball State University and a B.A. in Psychology from Franklin College, also in Indiana. Dr. Persinger served in a leadership capacity for the National Association of School Psychologists for 5 years and continues her work with the GLBTQ Issues Committee. She consulted on the American Psychological Association’s Healthy LGBTQ Students Project when it began in 2000 and has continued to support it since that time.

Dr. Persinger has many years of experience working in residential treatment with both adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities and those with brain injuries. She also has experience working schools as a school psychologist. Dr. Persinger provides coaching services to district and school teams for the Arizona Department of Education to support capacity building for systems changes to improve outcomes for students with disabilities. She works closely with other faculty around the state on collaborative endeavors to support school psychology training and practice statewide. Dr. Persinger also provides training and consultation for school districts seeking improvement in services and outcomes related to school-based intervention and systems level support for academic and behavioral issues. Currently, Dr. Persinger is the President-Elect of the Arizona Association of School Psychologists. Her focus in the training program is on applied school psychology skills.

When does registration end?
Early registration for SAPA members and University students and their supervisors will end on March 30th at 1:30 p.m.

Are refunds available?
Refunds are available up to 24-hours in advance of the event. Please contact SASP Executive Board Member James Geiger to initiate the process.

Is registration available at the door?
Registration will be available up until the start of the event for the $15 community ticket price as space allows. Please note that space is limited–you are highly recommended to register in advance.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?
Parking is free and on-site at the conference center. Plaza Arboleda is centrally located near Grant and Dodge streets in Tucson.
